Growing for the love of it!
Dear Fellow Tomato Lover:

Welcome to the NJ Championship Tomato Weigh-In web site. It is here you'll find neat Tomato Growing Tips to include how to sow your seed, potting techniques, steps in  transplanting and the overall proper care of your tomato plants. Also, in case you start late, we have a feature on planting a  second crop  in the middle of the growing season... just by obtaining  tomato cuttings from someone else's tomato garden. It's that e-z.  Our objective is for you to have fun growing great, BIG, mouth-watering tomatoes.

The Weigh-In thanks all those who have supported the program over the years especially  the NJ garden centers who have helped in making the search to find finding the biggest tomato each year... a reality! This year, 2004, we will present new sponsors who will assist in making prize moneys for the Finals bigger than ever before. Hopefully by the middle of June, the date for the finals and the prize moneys will be announced.

Periodically, we will feature a unique personality who has the "competitive edge" to growing tomatoes.  Click here to read about our current featured grower who will help make your growing experience more enjoyable.

Lastly, we are still offering select seeds derived from the past winners and grown in an organic environment. Over the years, we have received hundreds of compliments regarding how well these seeds have performed.  If you are interested, go here to Register.

21 Annual Contests - Average Winning Weight - 4.26 Lbs.
One of the key challengers every year is Minnie Zaccaria.  She has won 7 years out of 21 and holds the record for growing the heaviest tomato in New Jersey at 6.16 pounds.

When Minnie enters contests, she always expects to see tough competition, and she knows that champion growers always test her green thumb.... such as Richard Tempalski, the 1996 Champ with a 4.78 lb. tomato and Bill Krauss, the first to break the 4 pound tomato barrier and who is better known for his Big Bill tomatoes ... where hundreds of Internet Visitors received some of his seeds!

Of course Bill, Minnie, Richard; plus, other past champs, know that the growing conditions include weather, soil and proper watering are major factors to make big tommy tomato grow!

Take a look at the Tomato Weight history to see how over the last 21 contests tomato weights have been trending upwards. Just like the stock market..... hmmmm I wonder.

She owns the State when it comes to growing Tomatoes!
